I believe the Canary Islands have had a bit of bad rep recently, with TV programmes focusing on the drunken antics of 18 years olds in Playa De Las Americas, however I am fighting the beautiful islands corner as I have just returned from a relaxing, sunny and beautiful Easter break on the island of Tenerife.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with the Canary Islands, they sit on the northwestern coast of Africa and are among Spain’s furthest flung territories. These volcanic areas of natural beauty are made up of 7 islands; Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and the lesser known El Hierro.
The brief before we set off was unlike our usual holiday hit list because rather than involving active sports, trekking, wind-surfing and snorkeling it was completely based around relaxation! So off to Tenerife we went and to my surprise and delight it came up trumps.
We didn’t go to one of the main resorts but instead stayed in a 5 star hotel just outside Costa Adeje called Bahia Principe Tenerife (I believe they are a chain which operates top hotels across the world but you didn’t get that vibe when you were there).
The thing I absolutely love when I’m in a warm and sunny climate is the ability to dine outside and not require a patio heater, fleece or hand warmers! My favourite meal of the day is breakfast (yes debatable I know) and I LOVE waking up to fresh tea or coffee, breathing the sea air and dining outside on fresh fruit (all tasting better than in the UK), warm pastries and the odd weird option that you would never eat normally but tastes amazing abroad!
The other thing I adore (apart from uninterrupted reading) are the beautiful colours you see at this time of year abroad (unlike the odd sprinkle of daffodils in the UK, which don’t get me wrong are a welcome sign of Spring to come). The vibrant colours, mixed with blue skies and sparkling sunshine always put a smile on your face.
So would I return to Tenerife in March? Absolutely, and I would recommend anyone to do the same! It was the perfect mixture of relaxation, sunshine and fresh air – the perfect recipe to recharge your batteries and back to the hectic life of a 30-something!
Thanks for having me Tenerife…
