Ed Sheeran’s new album ‘Divide’ is currently sitting comfortably at the top of the UK album chart, and has been for the past six weeks, so it probably comes as no surprise that the pop sensation will be the first dance song of choice at 1 in 7 British weddings*
Or does it? Shouldn’t a first dance song be unique to the couple getting married? Surely not all of those people gazed lovingly into each others eyes on a first date listening to Mr Sheeran? Probably not, but why is there so much emphasis on this one tune? Can’t you just pick a song because…well…you both like it?!
My husband and I aren’t big music people (in fact our friends would tell you our taste in music is terrible – especially my husband’s), and yes we did consider ‘Thinking Out Loud’ as our first dance song, but we just weren’t one of those couples that had ‘a song’. So in the end we went classic and chose ”Stand By Me’ by Ben E. King because a) we love the 80’s movie with the same name, b) we just like it and c) we didn’t look like complete idiots when doing a practice dance in our lounge over a bottle of wine (debatable)!
So if you’re deliberating what you want that ‘special’ song to be then all I will say is relax…have fun in choosing it together and if one doesn’t spring to mind right away then that’s okay. Take your time, however I can’t emphasise the importance of the decision enough because it’s the one thing that you hear for years afterwards. When I hear ‘Stand By Me’ spontaneously on the radio it always brings a smile to my face and transports me right back to that moment.
If the very thought of it still fills you with dread (and we’re not talking the full Dirty Dancing, “nobody puts baby in a corner” ensemble) then here is a little inspiration to help you on your way…
