6 Steps To Melt-Proof Makeup | Wedding Guest Makeup That Lasts The Distance

The tricky thing with summer weddings, especially if it’s a really warm day or if you’ve jetted off abroad for the nuptials, is to keep your makeup in place all day without the need for constant touch-ups (you’d no doubt much rather be on the dance floor than powdering your nose!).

Here are our top tips on keeping your makeup looking fresh from morning to, well, morning again. I recently put these to the test for a wedding in Milan (around 28c), in Ibiza (around 30c) and recently in good old Milton Keynes when it hit 32c!

1. Prep the Base
This is such an important step no matter the weather. Hydrated, well-primed skin is a much better canvas for makeup to glide onto and a good primer helps foundation and concealer to stay locked in place. I love The Ordinary High-Spreadability Fluid Primer*.  It makes my skin silky smooth and so much easier to blend foundation on top of.

2. Blend Your Base With Setting Spray
Setting Sprays aren’t just a final step. I like to spray a beauty sponge with fixing spray (Urban Decay Chill is my weapon of choice) and then bounce this all over my face once I’ve applied my foundation and concealer. I find this really helps to lock it all in place and it seems to work well to prevent under eye concealer creasing. Sometimes I’ll spritz the damp sponge before I apply the foundation too so it mixes together. I’ve no idea if this is “prooven” to work but it makes me feel better and I think it does!

3. Embrace Dewy Skin
If the weather is really hot, you’re just going to be fighting a losing battle trying to achieve a matte look. You’re much better off embracing dewy, highlighted skin plus it’s a lot more flattering and youthful anyway. Only powder where you really need it. Take a small powder brush and dust under the eyes and around the nose and the chin. Unless you have really oily skin, for most people this will be enough. Layer upon layer of powder onto sweaty skin will be counterintuitive. You’ll just go cakey which will look a lot worse than a natural glow.

4. Layer Products
Blusher is one of the first things to fade on the face. I like to use a cream blush underneath a powder to lock the colour in for longer. It’s going to come as no surprise that I usually go for my Nars Multiple in Orgasm * with the powder version of the blush over the top.

This layering technique works well too for bronzers and highlighter. For a bronzed face I like to use Benefit’s Dew The Hoola and then add my Chanel Les Beiges Bronzer over the top. For my highlight, a bit of Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Pearl with my Charlotte Tilbury highlighter* on top of this. The golden rule is to put all your cream based products on first, then add your powders.

5. The Eyes Have It
As you prep your skin it makes sense to prep and prime your eyelids too. An eye shadow primer gives your eyeshadow something to stick to which makes it last longer. I’m a big fan of Benefit Air Patrol especially in the summer as it has an SPF in it.

I also make sure to use waterproof makeup as much as possible. Waterproof mascara is a must for weddings anyway with emotions running high. I like tight lining my eyes to open them up more using Urban Decay Waterline Eyeliner.

If you’re using eyeliner on the lids, the layering technique works well here too.  Just take a thin eyeliner or angled brush and push eyeshadow over the liner to keep it in place.

6. Spritz Frequently
When you’ve finished your face, spritz it again with setting spray and allow to dry. Throughout the day I like to spray on more setting spray or even hydrating sprays such as the Caudalie Beauty Elixir. I know a lot of people think that this wets the face and makes makeup slide off, but the opposite is true, it’s a great way to refresh your makeup without the need to powder.
