The month of May heralds the start of wedding season and with the start of wedding season comes frantic Google searches of, “What to wear to a wedding?”
Our first piece of advice if ever asked what to wear to a wedding would be “wear what you like” as we’re big believers in personal style and being able to express that. However, weddings are slightly different and there are a few rules/guidelines to think about. Our general guidance would be:
-
Don’t wear white. This is for the Bride and no-one else.
-
Don’t wear black. Weddings are not a sombre occasion
-
Don’t look like a Kardashian. Skin Tight, Tits out, Skirt so short guests can see what you had for dinner is not acceptable.
-
Dress up. Make an effort. Don’t be the tw*t who turns up in jeans. Even for an evening do.
While the ever so reliable British climate might not be on your side, May should, should, count as Spring. And while it’s a tad predictable you can’t beat florals and pastel colours to wear to a wedding at this time of year. Too Mumsy you say? Not when styled with a modern twist like our top picks below.
First of our picks is the gorgeous green floral number from Rixo London (quickly becoming a W&B favourite brand!). Cut from fluid silk crepe de chine, it has a Mandarin collar outlined in white and billowy ruffles below a ruched panel. It turns to reveal a striking cutout back which gives the dress a modern edge. The long sleeves are perfect if the weather doesn’t play ball or if you don’t want to look too “summery”. We’d pair this with while kitten-heeled mules.

And on the subject of green dresses, (they are having a bit of a micro-trend moment) we also recommend this Self-Portrait number. We love the ruffled trims and flared hem and as a high-end high street price point, the shoulder-baring cutouts will take you through to summer.

This dress is very bright so certainly makes a statement, but like the previous pick, it could also take you through to summer. We’ve seen a number of Instagrammers rocking the maxi-dress version, but we love the midi length. The pale blue chevron design adds an unexpected twist that we love!

More relaxed than our other picks, this Topshop Floral Print Wrap Dress would be great for a chilled-out, informal occasion. The multi-coloured print is modern so not “mumsy”. On a practical level the wrap dress makes a great choice for pregnant women and nursing mothers, so you can still look “in fashion” but feel comfortable. A dilemma we have both experienced! We wouldn’t normally recommend buying a head-to-toe look but we love how this is styled with the pink platforms!

Despite having long-sleeves and a high neck, this Hope & Ivy dress is far from stuffy and in fact, very elegant and subtly sexy. Like our first pick, the long-sleeves can also be practical if there’s still a slight chill in the air. The floral pattern screams “spring season”.

It wouldn’t be a Whisper & Blush fashion feature without a handbag! OKay, not the most purse friendly option (no surprises there!) but the neutral colour of this Gucci number is perfect for a spring wedding and would go with nearly anything.

Are you off to a wedding? We’d love to know what you plan to wear!
