September to me always feels more like a time for new beginnings than the New Year. Maybe it stems from that ‘Back to School’ feeling of getting a new pencil case, shoes and school coat. Or maybe it’s because I’m too hungover and jaded to think too much about starting anything new and life-changing on Jan 01st… (I jest, sort of…)
… Whatever the reason, I always look forward to September and planning my autumn/winter purchases. With the weather as it has been recently in the UK (one day a heat wave, the next feeling very autumnal) I’ve already treated myself to my winter handbag in the form of the Mulberry Amberley Satchel. I remember seeing sneak-peeks of the new riders lock fastening on their Instagram feed before the bag was released and absolutely loved it. The new shape is a bit of a departure for the brand and it really has taken on a more modern feel over the last few collections. While Mulberry has always produced great quality leather goods, I don’t think it’s been since the release of their ‘Alexa’ that they’ve managed to have an “It’ bag on their hands. I’ve already seen a few imitations of the design on the high street, so I think they’ve nailed it with this one. I also ‘ummed and ahhed’ over the slightly larger design with top handle, but I’m so glad I went for this one as it’s the perfect size for every day but still small enough it works on a (rare) evening out.
(This purchase hasn’t completely stopped me lusting over a Gucci bag, I’m still using the excuse that the double G emblem is perfect as it’s my daughter’s initials, and therefore I can pass the bag down to her!) I’ve pulled together a selection of satchel style bags I’m loving below.
With the ‘back to school’ theme in mind, I do need a new smart coat. I’ve had my beautiful Reiss coat for a good few years and with it being such a pale colour it is now finally beginning to show its age. I’ve decided that with winter being grey and dull, it would be nice to inject a bit of colour into my wardrobe. I came across this check patterned long wrap coat by Ted Baker and have decided that I need to make it mine! I also love the plain burgundy coloured one here.
People would disagree with this statement (my husband, and Kate for that matter, to name a couple) but I am getting a lot more strategic with my shopping and not buying so much on impulse. I like to have a regular tidy out of my wardrobe and then look at what gaps I have and what I actually need. I’m certainly in the market for some new black knee-high flat boots and also some slip on mules/loafers. Loafers were everywhere last season and did look like they could be a fad (remember this fur-lined Gucci pair?!) but they seem set to stay and I think would be a great choice for the office (and for driving. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realised I can only drive in flat shoes!).
Finally, knitwear. I love me a big fluffy jumper. Kate styled up one of my Modern Rarity numbers from last year at our recent shoot with Motee Maids and I remembered just how lovely they are. I saw a blue one in John Lewis the other day and have already made a mental note of its exact location ready to get next time I’m in town.
